Dubai's skyline and man-made islands get most of the attention, but the older Deira and Bur Dubai districts along the Creek — gold souks, spice markets, abra boat crossings — show a very different, pre-boom city that's easy to skip on a short trip. Desert excursions and the Burj Khalifa observation deck are worth booking ahead, not walking up to.
