In their own words: “Tulum is the only major Mayan city built directly on the coast and it's one of the most photogenic archaeological sites in all of Mexico. Its name comes from Yuatk Maya, the word for wall. And when you see it, you'll understand why. Once known as Zama, meaning city of the dawn, Tulum was a spiritual and economical powerhouse between the 13th and 15th centuries. It thrived as a trading port linking inland cities to sea, especially through canoe trade, routes that stretched as far as Honduras and central Mexico.”
