Hotel Palisade
★ 4.4hotel
“Our first port of call is here... Hotel Palisade. Built back in nineteen fifteen. It was also the last drinks on home soil for many of the ANZACS in World War One. Downstairs in the Public House it’s your classic honest pub feed. But if you head upstairs to Henry Deane that’s where things get a bit fancy. They do these great shared plates... And if you want to stay the night they actually have eight boutique rooms upstairs. They’re all themed with these cool hand-painted maritime murals.”
Lord Nelson Brewery Hotel
★ 4.5hotel
“This is the Lord Nelson Brewery Hotel. Now this building is a real icon because it is Sydney’s oldest continuously licensed hotel dating all the way back to eighteen forty one. If you’re a beer fan you’re in the right place. They brew their own award winning ales right inside these walls. You have to try the Three Sheets pale ale or the Old Admiral. For food they are famous for their beef and Guinness pie. They also have accommodation upstairs with nine double rooms that have been restored to keep that historic feel.”
Garrison Church
★ 4.8experience
“Up ahead is the Garrison Church. Its real name is Holy Trinity... but everyone calls it the Garrison because it was the first official military church in Australia. It was built back in the eighteen forties for the soldiers... If you look at the architecture it’s got that beautiful old Gothic style. Um... what’s really cool is that it was actually built using sandstone quarried right here in the area.”
Hero of Waterloo
★ 4.4bar
“As we keep heading east and walk down the hill on our left you’ll see the Hero of Waterloo. It was built in eighteen forty three by convicts and you can still see the chisel marks in the sandstone walls today. This is the place with the legendary stories of the secret tunnels. Word is there was a trapdoor under one of the bar stools... There's a tragic story about a former landlady named Anne Kirkman... she haunts the place to this day. If you’re looking for a feed, they’ve got some serious options here. You can’t go past the lamb shank bourguignon or the slow-cooked beef wellington.”
Harbour View Hotel

“The Harbour View Hotel (tucked right under the bridge).”
The Mercantile

“The Mercantile (Australia’s oldest Irish pub).”
The Fortune of War
★ 4.4bar
“The Fortune of War (Sydney’s oldest pub, licensed in eighteen twenty-eight).”
The Orient

“The Orient and the beautiful street dining of George Street.”
