It's the home of the Cape Malay community, whose ancestors were brought from Malaysia, Indonesia, and across Africa in the 18th century. While it's a great spot to take photos, savor authentic Cape Malay cuisine, and visit local art galleries, we found it's an area where you need to be extra careful and aware of your surroundings. Again, it's best to explore on a walking tour so you can learn about the history as well.”

In their own words: “Obviously you probably have seen already the colorful houses in Cape Town. Those are in the city center, specifically in Bo Kaap, an area built for slaves brought from Malaysia, Indonesia and the rest of Africa to work. The houses were leased to the slaves and while on lease, all the houses had to be white. When this rule was lifted, the slaves were allowed to buy the properties and painted bright colors to express their freedom. We recommend you to visit the Bo Kaap Museum, which is very important to understand the history of the neighborhood.”
