“Next is a place known for its amazing wood-fired vegetables. This is enboca Kyoto in Karasuma. A popular spot for wood-fired vegetables and pizza made with Kyoto produce. The open kitchen lets you enjoy the sounds and aromas of cooking. I always order the seasonal soup when I visit. This time it was turnip potage, rich and comforting. Next is their signature wood-fired vegetable platter. A generous plate filled with carefully selected seasonal ingredients. Simply seasoned with salt to bring out the natural flavors. I also ordered the lotus root pizza and the Kyoto-style pizza with green onions and Sansho pepper. The crispy lotus root and fragrant toppings creates a true taste of Kyoto. A great place to enjoy the best of Kyoto's seasonal ingredients.”

“Next is another wonderful spot in Gion. This is ZEN CAFE, which I visited earlier this year. The cafe offers a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. I ordered their recommended fruit sandwich and a cup of tea. This time, it was a strawberry sandwich. The sweet cream and tart strawberries pair perfectly together. A wonderful place to unwind and enjoy a quiet moment.”

“Next, let's visit a popular bakery cafe. This is AMAM DACOTAN, a bakery cafe in Karasuma. The shelves are lined with beautiful and delicious-looking breads. There's a huge variety, from savory breads to rustic loaves. Let's dig in at the cafe on the second floor. You can tell it's going to be good before the first bite. Every item feels like the star of the show. One of my favorite bakeries that I always want to come back to.”

“First up is Trattoria M Kyoto, just a short walk from Kyoto Station. A stylish Italian restaurant with a bright and open atmosphere. I ordered their lasagna lunch set, perfect for cheese lovers. Crispy on the outside, rich and flavorful on the inside. I also ordered their Saikyo miso and whitebait pizza. The sweet miso and savory whitebait pair perfectly together. A perfect place to enjoy a relaxing Italian lunch.”

“Next, let's enjoy a traditional obanzai lunch in a Kyoto townhouse. This is Kyomachiya Izumo Kanoka, also near Kyoto Station. A beautiful obanzai lunch served in a historic Kyoto townhouse. The retro interior still reflects the charm of the Taisho era. A colorful obanzai lunch featuring seasonal Kyoto vegetables. For the main dish, I chose the chicken Kuzu pepper rice bowl. Each dish is carefully prepared and delicately flavored. The rice bowl is also delicious with dash poured over it. A wonderful place to enjoy a classic Kyoto-style lunch.”

“Next is a steamed meal set that I visited back in February. This is Fujitora in Gion-Shijo. Their signature steaming method brings out the natural flavors of each ingredient. You can also relax while overlooking a beautiful seasonal garden. The seasonal vegetable steamed meal has arrived. Kyoto vegetables, Kyoto pork, and seasoned rice are served in separate steamers. The Kyoto pork is tender, flavorful, and surprisingly light. A healthy lunch featuring carefully selected ingredients from Kyoto.”

“Next is a beloved retro Western-style restaurant. The display window filled with food replicas creates a nostalgic atmosphere. This is Masuya, located within walking distance of Shijo Station. I used to visit this restaurant often during my university days. The prices have barely changed since then. I highly recommend the omelet rice and Lunch B set. First, their classic omelet rice. A traditional omelet rice wrapped in a thin layer of egg. Inside is buttery ketchup rice with beef instead of chicken. Next is Lunch B, a plate packed with classic Western-style dishes. A very satisfying lunch plate. Comfort food that you'll never get rid of. A true retro classic in Kyoto.”

“Next is a lovely restaurant located within a temple grounds. This is dd Shokudo inside Bukkoji temple. A beautiful place where you can truly experience Kyoto. I ordered the Kyotango set meal with mackerel chirashi-style sushi and soup. I also couldn't resist ordering the Yuba udon from Miyama. A whole sheet of Yuba is served on top, creating a gentle and comforting flavor. It's the kind of taste that makes you want to come back again. A wonderful restaurant that captures the sprit of Kyoto.”

“Next is one of Kyoto's most famous long-established restaurants. This is Kyogoku Kaneyo in Shinkyogoku. A historic eel restaurant that has been serving customers since the Meiji era. The traditional wooden building adds to its nostalgic charm. I ordered their famous Kinshi-Don. A luxurious bowl topped with a huge Kyoto-style rolled omelet covering grilled eel. Their signature sauce, passed down through generations, enhances the eel perfectly. One of the places I always find myself returning to in Kyoto.”
