Schönbrunn Palace

Schönbrunn Palace

★ 4.7

experience

“Shon Brun Palace. It used to be the Hobsburg Summer Residence, and once you arrive, it's clear they didn't do things on a small scale. The palace itself is what most people recognize, but the main reason why I come here is actually everything around it. You walk through the courtyard and past the main building, and then it just opens up. Straight paths, long lines of trees, everything very controlled and very intentional. Lots of fountains and monuments, lots of benches to just sit and enjoy. You usually end up spending a few hours here without even noticing, just walking around. So, this is definitely not a quick stop for a photo.”

Hofburg Palace

Hofburg Palace

“Hoffberg Palace. This was the main residence of the Habsburgs for centuries right here in the center of Vienna. Unlike Shunbrun, which feels a bit separate, Hofberg is fully part of the city. Construction began back in the 13th century and over time it kept expanding. Each generation added something. So what you see today is a mix of different styles from medieval parts to Baroque and later editions. For a long time this was the political center of the empire.”

St. Stephen's Cathedral

St. Stephen's Cathedral

experience

“St. Steven's Cathedral. This is the main cathedral in Vienna, right in the middle of the old town. The first church on this spot dates back to the 12th century, but what you see today was mostly built later during the Gothic period. Over time, it became one of the key symbols of the city, closely tied to the Hobsburgs and the history of Vienna itself. A lot of important events happened here, including imperial ceremonies, weddings, and funerals.”

Belvedere Palace

Belvedere Palace

experience

“Belvadier Palace. Compared to Shon Brun and Hofberg, this place feels a bit calmer and more open. It was built in the early 18th century for Prince Eugene of Seavoi, one of the most important military commanders of the Hobsburg Empire. The complex is divided into upper and lower Belvadier, connected by large terrace gardens in between. Most people come straight to the upper Belvadier, mainly because this is where Gustaf Climpmpt's famous painting, The Kiss, is displayed.”

Vienna Christmas Markets

shopping

“During winter, this is also one of the main Christmas market locations in Vienna, set right in front of the palace. If you plan to go inside, tickets are paid and it's a good idea to book them online in advance, especially during peak season when the lines can get pretty long. There are a few ticket options depending on what you want to include. The classic pass, which covers the palace, privy garden, orangey garden, maze, and the glorette, is €44 in 2026. An extended version that also includes the zoo, the Palmhouse, and the desert experience goes up to €81. If you're only interested in the gardens, tickets are €16, while the zoo on its own is €29. Also, keep in mind that the complex has working hours, so it's worth planning your visit around that. And if you have the Vienna Pass, you can usually get small discounts on these tickets, typically around 5 to 10%.”

Cafe Central

“Cafe Central is probably the most famous one and usually the busiest. Historically, writers, philosophers, and political figures used to meet there, including people like Freud and Trotsky.”
